10 Reasons to Go Geocaching

If you've read before, you've heard me talking about geocaching.  It's hands-down my family's favorite activity to do together.  After a fun Saturday spent caching, I thought I'd share ten reasons why you should try geocaching

1.  Breathe some fresh air.  Being outdoors builds up the immune system and helps your body to stay healthy and strong.

 2. Take some time out from the business of life.  Geocaching is the opposite of our fast-paced instant- gratification society.  It takes patience and commitment to find some of those caches!

 3. Get some exercise.  Hiking builds up stamina, and hiking with kids really builds up stamina!

4. It's a great way to spend time with your family.

 5. Explore your community.  We have come to learn about so many parks, trails, community compost sites, and nature preserves right in our own community through geocaching.  There are many more caches that we have to find, and I can't wait to continue the tour of our area.

6.  Do an earthcache to learn about geological points of reference right in your own community.  We learned about this passive water treatment system on the land where we often hike that saves the nearby creek from mine runoff.

7. Observe wildlife like this yellow garden spider in its natural habitat.

8. Enjoy the beauty of Nature.  I believe that everything around us is God's creation made for us to enjoy, use, and respect. Around every bend in the path I see reminders of Him.   No matter what you believe though, I think that we can agree that nature is beautiful!

9. Meet new friends that enjoy hiking as well.  We attended our first caching event this weekend sponsored by The Outdoor Classroom, and we met so many families who share our interests.  The kids loved meeting, running, and playing with other kids too.

10. It's a great feeling of accomplishment when you find the cache!

    1. Geocaching is searching for a hidden "treasure" using coordinates found on the free website (geocaching.com). You plug the coordinates into your GPS, and then go and search for the cache. It could be anywhere from a guardrail in a parking lot to a hike, and some even involve boating to the cache- We avoid the ones with high terrain ratings.
