It's June! and Eco Kids

So, May was a crazy month for me, but we had a great time anyway! Here's a little montage of what we've been up to.

We had a great time at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Plant Sale (even though I think I killed some of my new plants!)

DIY Healthy Popsicles and Eco Kids

I have been trying to phase plastic out of my kitchen.  It hasn't been the easiest task for me since much of what my kids use is plastic.  Popsicles, however, I have down pat.  These are a simple and healthy treat that I don't mind feeding to my girls because they are simply made with keifer.

Materials:

  • Tall shot glasses
  • Washed popsicle sticks
  • Keifer
Instructions:
  1. Pour keifer into each shot glass filling the glass to the rim.
  2. Insert a popsicle stick into the middle of each glass.
  3. Freeze for several hours.
  4. To remove the popsicles, let them sit on the counter for about five minutes.

For Our Feathered Friends and Eco Kids

Last weekend we had the pleasure to visit the Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens- it's so close to our house, so we plan on visiting often! The garden is not open to the public yet, but we were able to get a preview tour.  It was so worth it, and while we were there, one of the volunteers who was helping with the tour was also an expert on birds.  This was really cool, and I learned a few things about birds even though the three year old and nearly two year old certainly prevented us from seeing a rare gem!

One thing about birds that I took away from the tour was that I would really like to encourage their presence in my yard, and now is the time to prepare some cozy nesting spots for them.  Our yard already has some birdhouses (pictured above), but my husband has also helped the girls to make some fun and colorful birdhouses which would make our bird watching so much more personal for Ana and Addie.

Why Attract Birds?

There are many reason to attract birds to your yard. Birds are great at controlling pests, and they eat aphids and other bugs that are not beneficial to our gardens.  The garden will also benefit from nectar drinking birds that provide pollination.  In addition, watching birds is fun, relaxing, and educational.  I have already learned to recognize calls from a few birds, and my daughters have learned to name several birds.  We are not the only ones who benefit though, private property accounts for about 80% of habitat for birds.  Making places on your property for birds to nest, eat, and bathe certainly makes it easier for birds to survive despite huge amounts of land turning residential.  (For more details check this site.)

Tips for Attracting Birds

The bird expert who I had the pleasure of meeting gave some great tips for attracting birds this season:

  • Have your birdhouses out by the end of March.
  • Use suet cages or a mesh produce bag to hold pet hair and small pieces of yarn for birds to use in their nests.
  • Hang your birdhouses in pairs.
  • Hang feeders during the winter months when plants and bugs are scarce.
Make a Treat for Birds

 Materials:

  • Yarn
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Scissors
  • Peanut butter
  • Knife
  • Birdseed
  1. Use the knife to cover the toilet paper roll in peanut butter.
  2. Roll the covered rolls in birdseed.
  3. Cut lengths of yard long enough to create loops to hang the roll by (roughly a foot and a half- no need to measure.)
  4. Put the end of the yard through the toilet paper roll, and tie the two ends together to form a loop.
  5. Hang the treats on tree branches in your yard.

Get Moving and Eco Kids

This week, I decided to stop staring out the window longingly and get moving. Who Has Time for the Gym has organized an Active Parent Challenge where you can pledge how many minutes a day you want to get up and get moving with the kids. For our first day of the challenge, we went for a walk to the park.  My daughters and my nephew loved it.  Ana even found some treasures for our new nature table that we set up.

Mini Discovery Bottles

Mini Discovery BottlesMini discovery bottles are the perfect addition to a set of busy bags.  Although we filled ours, at Ana's request, with sequins that I've had sitting around the house for years.  The goal is to not have to buy any materials but make a great toy that kids enjoy.

Materials:
  • Empty, washed spice jars
  • Materials to fill (sequins, glitter, sand, seashells, stones, pom poms, paper clips, tiny toys etc.)
  • Super glue

To make the project, simply display materials to be put in the jars, and allow your child to choose what to put in their jar.  You can make themed jars yourself.  Super glue the lids securely in place, and then add the cute jars to your set of busy bags for a great toy to use when you're out and about.

For an alternative idea, make the bottles yourself and surprise your kids with them.  It would be much less messy!

Important: Sequins and glitter are choking hazards.  They are shards of metal!  Other small objects are choking hazards as well, and this should only be done under CLOSE adult supervision.  If you have materials all over like I did, it is important that you clean them all up right away to avoid hazards.
