Quite some time ago, I read an article about a group of children who made used t-shirts into reusable shopping bags. They sold the bags and gave the profits to The Blue Planet Project. The idea behind the project was to cut down on the use of plastic bags which end up in the ocean and further threaten the survival of endangered species such as the loggerhead sea turtle. Although this is not the article I originally read, you can read about this group of kids here on page 18.
After reading this article, I was inspired. I am slowly building my collection of reusable shopping bags, and I am slowly starting to REMEMBER to take them into the grocery store and other stores as well when I shop. I thought that this idea of turning t-shirts into bags would be perfect for me. I found this tutorial, and I got to work.
I started with a pile of old t-shirts that were not very worn, we just no longer prefer the fit.
This is what the finished product looks like. They were very easy to make, and they will be easy to wash as well. My only complaint of the night was that when I had all of the sewing things packed back away, I saw that I forgot to do one shirt! An added bonus was because I had some shirts that were too small and some that were too big, I now have several sized bags.
